Four service bays at Rafa's Auto Repair in Santa Fe, with vehicles raised on lifts and a technician at work

Independent auto repair · Santa Fe, New Mexico

Honest diagnosis. Quality repair. No runaround.

The independent shop Santa Fe drivers use instead of the dealership service department. You bring us the symptom — a noise, a light, a feeling — and we find the actual fault, explain what we found, and repair what needs repairing. Nothing more.

Why people send their friends here

We’re here to fix cars. Not sell you things you don’t need.

Most people arrive at a repair shop braced for it. The flush nobody asked for. The “while we’re in there.” The number that lands nowhere near the estimate.

That is the thing our customers keep writing about, in their own words, across eighteen years: they didn’t get that here.

One customer was told by other shops he needed a new engine — roughly five thousand dollars. Rafa tested it and found the actual fault.

Can we work on your vehicle?

The vehicles in our bays most weeks.

Cars, pickups and SUVs, domestic and import. Every make below is here because it has genuinely been through this shop — not because it looked good in a list.

Yours not listed? Call and ask  We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s work for this shop.

Instead of the dealership

Dealership-level attention. Local-shop honesty.

A good independent shop is not the cheap option. It is the one where the person who diagnosed your vehicle is the person who repairs it, and the one where you can ask what something means and get a straight answer.

If you are driving something newer and wondering whether it has to go back to the dealer for everything — this is the conversation worth having.

“Rafa is a super patient person when it comes to your vehicle needs, he explains everything with detail, I don’t trust any other mechanic on my vehicles.”

01

Personal service

You talk to the mechanic who is going to work on your vehicle, not to somebody relaying messages. Ask a question and you get the answer from the person holding the tool.

02

Honest recommendations

What needs attention now, what can safely wait until the next visit, and what doesn’t need doing at all. You get told all three, so you can decide.

03

Professional diagnostics

We test before we replace. Finding the actual fault costs less than replacing parts one at a time until the warning light gives up.

04

Care over years

A vehicle that gets looked at regularly is a vehicle whose problems stay small. That is the whole point of having one shop instead of whoever is open.

How a repair goes

Four steps. You approve the work before it happens.

01

Diagnose

We find the actual problem. Not the easiest guess, and not the most expensive one.

02

Explain

We tell you what we found in plain language, and what it means for the vehicle.

03

Recommend

What needs doing now, what can wait, and what doesn’t need doing at all.

04

Repair

The work gets done properly, and the bill lands where the estimate said it would.

Took my 2007 F150 in for repairs he was quick and solved the problem that nobody else could figure out. Others were telling me that I might need a motor, but Rafa checked it out he took care of the problem 600.00 instead of 5000.00 for engine. I will recommend Rafa automotive to everyone.

This mechanic gave me a realistic analysis which coincided with what other mechanics had said, but I haven't worked with him before so that tells me a lot about his level of honesty and integrity. I would recommend.

The long view

A shop you keep. Not a shop you find in an emergency.

The customers who get the most out of this shop are the ones we see before something breaks. They come in on their service intervals, we get to know the vehicle, and the problems get caught while they are still inexpensive.

That is the difference between maintaining a vehicle and reacting to one. A scheduled service with the fluids and filters actually done on time costs a fraction of the failure it prevents — and a vehicle with a real service history is worth more when you sell it.

One family brings all four of their vehicles here. A customer who moved to Albuquerque still drives back. That is what we are building here, one vehicle at a time.

Scheduled & preventive maintenance

Buying a used vehicle? Have it inspected first

“We bring all 4 of our vehicles to Rafa. He’s done everything from simply replacing shocks to a complete engine install. Always professional, friendly, honest and the work is excellent. We won’t go anywhere else.”

Todd Glatz

“I took my vehicle in today for standard maintenance, underbody inspection and tire rotation. Extremely happy with the professionalism, service and integrity.”

What you’re actually paying for

The right repair. Done correctly. By people you trust.

A correct diagnosis, a straight recommendation, and work that holds. That is the whole of it.

There is a difference between a shop that is cheap and a shop that doesn’t charge you for things you didn’t need. We would rather be the second one — and the number our customers keep mentioning is not the price, it’s that the final bill matched the estimate.

“Honestly I can’t recall the last time a SF mechanic final bill was even ‘proximity’ to the estimate.”

Broke down on the way to somewhere else?

Nine of our reviews are from people who never planned to meet us. Cross-country drivers, campers coming out of the Pecos, families on vacation. Same-day diagnosis, back on the road the next morning, more than once.

The people behind the work

Meet Rafa.

Rafael Muñoz has run this shop in Santa Fe since 2008. Customers ask for him by name in almost every review — Rafa, Rafael, Raf — which tells you how the place works. You’re not handed to a service writer. You talk to the mechanic.

One customer moved to Albuquerque and still drives back. Another brings all four family vehicles. A third wrote that the only reason she hated leaving a review was wanting to keep the place to herself.

Before you call

Questions

Do I need to know what’s wrong with my car before I call?

No. Describing what you notice — a noise, a light, a smell, a feeling in the pedal — is enough. Diagnosing it is our job, not yours. “Not sure” is a completely normal answer.

My vehicle is still fairly new. Do I have to use the dealership?

Once the vehicle is out of warranty, where it gets serviced is your decision. Plenty of our customers drive newer vehicles and choose an independent shop for the same reason: they want to talk directly to the person doing the work, and they want the diagnosis explained to them. If your vehicle is still under factory warranty, keep us in the conversation and we’ll tell you honestly when something belongs at the dealer instead.

Will you follow my manufacturer’s maintenance schedule?

Yes. We go by what your manufacturer specifies for your vehicle, its mileage and how you actually drive it — rather than a sticker interval designed to bring you back sooner. Bring the schedule or the service history and we’ll work from it.

Will you recommend work I don’t actually need?

No. It is the single thing our customers write about most. One reviewer was told by other shops that he needed a new motor; the actual repair was six hundred dollars. Another was told by a tire shop that her rotors were bad — they weren’t. We tell you what we find, including when the answer is that nothing needs doing.

What does it cost, and how firm is the estimate?

We diagnose first, then quote, then you decide. Customers write repeatedly that the final bill matched the estimate — which is the number that actually matters. We are not trying to be the lowest price in Santa Fe; we are trying to be the shop where the right work gets done once.

What kinds of vehicles do you work on?

Domestic and import cars, pickups, SUVs, vans and older vehicles. Customers have brought us everything from a Subaru and a Corolla to an F-150, a Jeep, an Acura and a Corvette. If you are not sure whether your vehicle is a fit, call and ask — we will tell you honestly.

Can you inspect a used vehicle before I buy it?

Yes, and it is one of the best hours you can spend. We look at the vehicle the way we would if it were already yours, and tell you what it will need and roughly when.

I broke down on a road trip. Can you help today?

Call and tell us where you are and what happened. Travellers passing through Santa Fe are a real part of what we do — several reviews describe same-day diagnosis and being back on the road the next morning. We can’t promise a timeline before we see the vehicle, but we’ll tell you honestly and quickly what’s possible.

How do I get an appointment?

Send a service request through this site or call the shop directly. Tell us the vehicle, what it’s doing, and roughly when you’re free.
